January 5, 1948: First color newsreel released to U.S. movie theaters

Warner Brothers-Pathe released Cinecolor film footage shot a few days earlier, on New Year’s Day, showing excerpts from the Tournament of Roses Parade and the Rose Bowl football game, both of which had taken place in Pasadena, California. It was the first color newsreel seen by U.S. movie theater audiences. Black and white newsreels had debuted in 1910 and were shown extensively during World War I and World War II, usually before or between entertainment movie double features.
