Abyssinian (Ethiopian) infantry, 1936. While Hitler rearmed Germany, Italy under Mussolini launched an attack against Ethiopia as the first step in an effort to recreate the ancient Roman empire that had stretched around the Mediterranean. Although many Ethiopian soldiers were better armed than these, they were no match for the technologically superior Italian forces. Ethiopia fell to the invaders in 1936, despite a League of Nations embargo against Italy (which, unfortunately, did not include an embargo on oil shipments).
