Aspiring school teacher, Eduard Cech, born on this day in 1893, chose mathematics and descriptive geometry as the focus for his mathematical education. After World War 1 and the completion of his doctorate in 1920, Cech's mathematical interest turned towards differential geometry. It wasn't until he was appointed chair of analysis at Masaryk University that he developed an interest in analysis and algebra. This interest spawned interests in topology which caused him to set his sights on bringing together point-set topology and algebraic topology. Cech is also credited with introducing the idea of inverse limit.
