February 23, 1951: Birthdate of mathematician Shigefumi Mori

Shigefumi Mori, a Japanese mathematician, worked in the field of algebraic geometry, where he made important contributions. His proof of the existence of minimal models for all three-dimensional algebraic varieties, which had been thought to be impossible, is known as Mori's Program. In 1990 he was awarded the Fields Medal.
