The first page of Thomas Jefferson's draft of the Declaration of Independence. When Lee's resolution was introduced to Congress in June, Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams drew up a statement justifying the causes for independence. Jefferson did most of the writing. His establishment of the causes of the revolution on the basis of inalienable human rights rather than on specific grievances (although he did list those in detail) has made this document a model for all revolutionary movements since then.
